MICROSCOPY

What This Is

Thermomicroscopy analyses consists of a group of techniques in which physical, optical characteristics of a substance being measured as a function of temperature or time while the sample is subjected to a predefined heating or cooling program in a specified atmosphere. Polymorphism is the ability of an element or compound to crystallize as more than distinct crystal species; for example, carbon as a cubic diamond or hexagonal graphite. Different polymorphs of a given compound generally as different in structure and properties s the crystals of two different compounds. Solubility, hardness, crystal habit (shape, optical and electrical properties or vapor phase all vary with the polymorphic form.

How This Benefits You

Thermomicroscopy can be used to ascertain:

  • Melting point/Freezing point
  • Eutectic temperature
  • Sublimation (solid-gas)
  • Transformation (solid-solid)
  • Crystallization (liquid-solid)
  • Desolvation
  • Purity
  • Decomposition (thermolysis)
  • Differential scanning calorimetry microscopy (microDSC)
